We believe that the best way for a child to learn or unlearn certain behaviors is through empathy and communication. If a behavior is unsafe or unkind we will redirect with positive language, emphasizing what they can do instead. If the redirection doesn’t suffice we might have a deeper conversation with the child about why the behavior is unsafe or unkind. If the behavior continues we will remove the child from the situation and let them choose what they might need in that moment to regulate. They might need space, a hug, to talk, or even to get their frustration out in a safe way (stomping, jumping, etc.)

Parents are welcome to stay and play! Especially in the early days, a child might have a hard time being dropped off in a new place. If a parent would like to stay in order to ease their child into a new setting, we welcome that. They need only sign in on the volunteer sheet. Volunteers will never be left unattended with any children but may participate in as many activities as they like and/or lead their own activities such as sharing a skill, a cultural practice, a song or a story.
Of course, volunteering is a wonderful way to help with integration but it is also welcomed throughout enrollment as it builds a strong sense of community among the children and grown ups alike.
